Due to the significance of e-commerce on the future performance of the economy, the UK Government has set itself the target of becoming :
'the best environment in the world to do
e-commerce.'
In the three months prior to interview, 63 per cent of adults in Great Britain (29 million) had accessed the Internet in February 2006. This represents 93 per cent of the adults who have ever accessed the Internet.
 
Here are some of the facts . . .
With 100 million Europeans spending an average of €1000 each in online shopping transactions this year, the European retail ecommerce sector is expected to power past €100 billion by the end of 2006.
  Forrester Research predicts that European online retail sales will increase by more than double to €263 billion in 2011; fueled by 174 million online shoppers increasing their average spend to €1,500 each
  The UK remains the major source of online retail spending, with average spends of €1,744. This is expected to increase to just over €2.4k in 2011.
  UK eCommerce is estimated to increase from €43 billion in 2006 to €76 billion in 2011.
  In an online survey 51% of men and 43% of women purchased goods online in March 2005. The average spend level in March 2005 (i.e. for one month only) was £127 per capita.
  Of those adults who have ever used the Internet, 67 per cent have bought or ordered goods or services, with adults aged 25-44 the most likely to buy on-line (73 per cent).
